The Gentlewoman: Language and Representation

Close-textual analysis: Gentlewoman front cover: 1) What do the typefaces used on the front cover suggest to an audience? The serif and sans serif fonts are created to be simple yet effective in terms of what the cover wants its full attention on, which is what the typefaces used on the front cover suggest to an audience. 2) How does the cover subvert conventional magazine cover design? The typical magazine cover would feature a medium-sized photo of the subject; but, in this instance, a much larger close-up shot defies the magazine cover pattern. 3) Write an analysis of the central image. The magazine was able to feature strong portrayals of celebrities and women in general because the magazine's central image defies the conventions of how a woman is perceived in contemporary culture. 4)  What representations of gender and celebrity can be found on this front cover? Women are portrayed on par with males in terms of the superiority they can display. 5) What gender and representa

The Gentlewoman: Audience and Industries

Media Magazine feature: Pleasures of The Gentlewoman: 1) What does the article suggest is different about the Gentlewoman compared to traditional women's magazines? The lady raises her middle finger in protest at these customs. It's actually startling how drastically different its minimalist covers are. The shot, which is framed like a painting and taken as a portrait, only has the title, subtitle, and name of the person in it as text. It makes a strong claim that this is art rather than merely a magazine. The masthead is written in lower case, as if that weren't different enough! The lady need not yell in comparison to Vogue, Elle, or Cosmopolitan.   2) What representations are offered in the Gentlewoman? The gentlewoman has a pleasingly diverse range of representation. It probably won't come as a surprise to anyone to learn that the vast majority of the gentlewoman's subjects are categorically not males, but it does a pretty excellent job of displaying a spectru

Industries: the appeal of print

Writer's Edit journal article: 1) What is the definition of an independent print magazine? The independent print publication is "published without the financial support of a large corporation or institution in which the makers control publication and distribution." 2) What does Hamilton (2013) suggest about independent magazines in the digital age? modest printed magazines may be quietly thriving even as the global newspaper and book businesses struggle, according to a modest but rising body of research. Hamilton (2013), p. 43. 3) Why does the article suggest that independent magazines might be succeeding while global magazine publishers such as Bauer are struggling? Large publishers in Australia like Bauer Media and News Limited struggle to keep readers from switching to internet publications. Independent magazine publishers, in contrast, make good use of digital innovations and have a significant online presence. 4) What does the article suggest about how independent

Media Paper 1 learner response

  1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to). WWW: There are some very useful lessons here plus some good work to build on. Q2 is strong and close to the upper levels. If we can reach that throughout we will be looking at a C+ grade minimum.  EBI: Revise ideology and ideological messages in media (Q3). You also can't leave questions blank... at the very least show your excellence knowledge of the CSP. Section B: audience and industry, revise terminology. Film: revise distribution.  2) Read  the mark scheme for this exam carefully , paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. This is some of the best analysis you can do as it gives you an idea of what the exam board is expecting. For your LR blogpost, identify  ONE  point you could have added for the first three questions in Section A: Q1 (unseen text) additional point/theory:   • The black and white colour scheme offers connotations of class, t
