The decline in print media

Part 1: Ofcom report into news consumption 2022: 1) Look at the headlines from the report on page 6. Pick three that you think are interesting and bullet point them here. Why did you pick those three in particular? From 2020 (1%), TikTok's reach for news rose to 7% in 2022. Ages 16 to 24 make up half of its user base for news. The reach of five of the top six TV networks among online adults declined from 2021, with the exception of BBC One, which continues to be the most popular news source across all platforms. For news, teens are turning to social media more than traditional outlets. These days, the top three news sources they utilise are YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. In the meantime, a lot of sources have seen declines since 2021; for example, BBC One/Two's reach dropped from 35% in 2021 to 24% in 2022.    I chose these because they provide statistics on how news organisations engage with a younger audience. In addition, they were published after 2020, following the COVI

Newspaper news story research

  1. Copy the  headline, date  and   link . 23/02/24 Mail online story 1 Headline:  Tourists are among 14 people missing and feared dead in Valencia apartment block inferno in addition to four victims known to have died when fire spread in Grenfell. The Guardian story 1 Headline:  Black children suffer ‘more complications’ after appendicitis surgery. 2.  Briefly summarise  the story in a sentence or two: is  this is an example of  hard news  or  soft news?  D oes it reflect the   politics  or   ideological stance  of that newspaper/website? Both stories are hard news as they are both serious matters. The Mail online story is about a fire that has taken place in Spain where some people sadly didn't make it through. The Guardian story is about  Black children in the UK are four times more likely to experience complications after appendicitis surgery than their white counterparts, a study has found.  The study, funded by the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and

Paper 1 mock exam learner response

  1) Type up any  feedback  in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to). WWW: Section A is pretty solid and not far from the higher levels. Now we need to add the exam technique to nudge that up and also match it across section B. EBI: Revise/re learn theories, more evidence from CSP's. 2) Write a  question-by-question analysis  of your performance. For each question, write how many marks you got from the number available and identify any points that you missed by carefully studying the AQA indicative content in the mark scheme: Q1: 3/8  • The iconic look sported by the model is that of the 1950s film star cf. Grace Kelly  or Marilyn Monroe - the archetypal post-war blonde bombshell beauty, arguably  designed to accommodate the male gaze. Q2: 4/12 • both products address aspects of gender identity and representation directly  within the context of their respective form. • these products both (arguably) have political intent reinforced by significant  cultura

Horizon Forbidden West: Audience and Industry

Audience: 1) What statistics can you find for the number of male / female players for the major consoles? Regarding demographics, the audience on all platforms is predominantly male. The largest ratio of male to female gamers is found on the Xbox Series X|S (68% vs. 32%) and PlayStation 5 (68% male; 29% female). 2) What is the difference between 'hardcore' and 'casual' gamers - and which do you think would play Horizon Forbidden West? The minority known as "hardcores," or those who claim to play video games competitively or with serious attention, is most represented on the PS5 (19%) and Xbox Series X|S (20%). The Nintendo Switch (45%) and PC are the platforms where casual gamers are most prevalent, with half of players identifying as such (51%).  Horizon Forbidden Forbidden West seems like a lighthearted game to me. 3) What are the different reasons YouGov researched for why players play games? Which of these would apply to Horizon Forbidden West? YouGov co

Horizon Forbidden West: Language and Representation

Language: Introduction: 1) Why does Guerrilla Games have 'a serious case of bad timing'? The 2017 open-world role-playing game Horizon Zero Dawn was eclipsed by Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which came out a week later and ended up becoming one of the greatest video games ever made. Now, while it produces a fantastic follow-up, Horizon Forbidden West, another phenomenon, Elden Ring, appears on its heels to suck away all the oxygen. Sadly, Guerrilla is a group of excellent developers that have terrible timing.    2) What is the narrative for the original game Horizon Zero Dawn? The games are set a millennium after the majority of humanity was wiped off by rogue machines. The survivors have gathered into tribal tribes where technology artefacts are either revered or viewed with distrust. The story of how our planet came to an end is told with the dramas of warring clans.   3) How is the central character Aloy described? With flame-haired heroine Aloy, one of the console generation&#

women in videogames and further feminist theory

Part 1: Reading - Is Female Representation in Video Games Finally Changing?: 1) How have women traditionally been represented in videogames and w hat percentage of the video game audience is female? People have long held the misconception that video game players are exclusively men. While this may have been the case during the arcade era, the survey "Distribution of Computer and Video Gamers in the United States from 2006 to 2017 by Gender" shows that 42% of video game players are female, proving that times have changed. Video games cannot therefore continue to exist by catering just to male consumers. 2) What recent games have signalled a change in the industry and what qualities do the female protagonists offer? The Walking Dead series, Tomb Raider, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, The Last of Us, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and other recent blockbuster games all feature significant female characters as protagonists or co-protagonists. All of these games were
