Feminist theory

Playing With The Past: Post-feminism and the Media   MM40 , page 64: 1) What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)? In the pilot episode of Pan Am we first meet  the stars of the show – the stewardesses –  through an image of Laura, one of the main  characters, on the front of a magazine cover.  It is interesting to note that this first image  of the Pan Am stewardesses is one which is  highly constructed and mediated, an image  whose purpose is to be admired and aspired to  by women, and visually enjoyed by men. 2) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form? It seems that at that time, being  an air stewardess was not seen as a career for  life; frequent references are made to finding a  husband, one stewardess commenting on Laura’s  magazine front cover, that ‘with a face like that  you will find a husband in a couple of months’. This shows that this is just sexism in a diff

January assessment learner response

  1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). Total = 12 = E WWW: Your unseen analysis in Q1 makes a range of good points which is a key skill for this paper. Now you need the knowledge of terminology and theory to back that up.  EBI: Q2 + Q3 are holding you back here. Revise industry terminology and PSB. In Q4, you need to develop a more critical perspective in questioning theories or explaining the other side of the argument. You don't mention the theory in the question - Gerbner's cultivation theory. Revise this.  2) Read  the mark scheme for this assessment  carefully. Identify at least  one  potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. Q1:  The image of Stormzy constructs a range of meanings. The medium shot sees Stormzy  looking down, not making eye contact with the audience. This is somewhat unconventional  for tour posters and music promotion. The image perhaps

introduction to feminism

  1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project? So women and men could also add their stories to raise solidarity and awareness.  2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies? People realise how often this happens and that people think that this is normal when it shouldn't be.  3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project? It's an online project where people have shared their own experiences and so without the technology it won't be as possible to share this and make others more aware.  4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is  YOUR  view on the future of feminism? I feel like even today there are still women being abused but women are more confident at speaking up and making sure that the man knows not to touch them. 1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networke

Representation blog task

  1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies? The word representation itself holds  a clue to its importance. When we see  a person, place, object or idea being  represented in a media text, it has in  some way been mediated by the very  act of representation. 2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media? • A picture editor selects the photo from  a whole series of images to be used to  illustrate a news story. The image may  be cropped, resized and, in some cases,  photoshopped. • A news editor will decide on the way  the story will be presented, and the use  of captions to pin down, or anchor, the  meaning of the image. • The photograph of Kate Middleton  in the newspaper is a re-presentation  of what she looks like, with people  controlling and manipulating the  image at various stages throughout the  process. • The Duchess herself, the person, is  some distance away from the image  that is reproduced. 3) S
