Semiotics: blog task

 1) What meanings are the audience encouraged to take about the two main characters from the opening of the film?

They probably assumed that the boys were in a gang due to their actions or that they were trouble makers as it seemed that the boys weren't listening to any one else.

2) How does the end of the film emphasise de Saussure’s belief that signs are polysemic – open to interpretation or more than one meaning?

As I mentioned before it seemed as if they weren't listening however towards the end we learn that the boys are def and so they couldn't hear a word anyone else was saying but this film emphasises de Saussure's belief as not everyone takes signs as the same meaning and different people interpret things differently.

Signs are made up of 2 parts: the signifier and the signified.

2) What does ‘polysemy’ mean?

There are many meaning for a word or phrase and everyone interprets it in their own way. 

3) What does Barthes mean when he suggests signs can become ‘naturalised’?

People don't question certain meanings as it has become normal to think that for example: the colour red meaning love or anger no one said that was the meaning but everyone has naturalised it. 

4) What are Barthes’ 5 narrative codes?

 hermeneutic code, proairetic code, cultural code, connotative code, and symbolic code.

5) How does the writer suggest Russian Doll (Netflix) uses narrative codes?

The title is symbolic code as the dolls get smaller and smaller each time their life resets.

2) Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?

It helps the audience understand the meaning deeper. 

3) Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?

So they don't have to change it due to other languages and its easier for any country to understand. 

4) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail?

This failed as it talks about removing no and therefore removing the ability to consent or not.

5) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.
